Dr. Athalya Brenner-Idan is Professor Emerita of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament at the University of Amsterdam, Professor of Biblical Studies at Tel Aviv University, and an Extraordinary Professor in the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Her several books include I AM: Biblical Women Tell Their Own Stories and The Intercourse of Knowledge: On Gendering Desire and ‘Sexuality’ in the Hebrew Bible. Prof. Brenner-Idan is a past president of the Society of Biblical Literature and edits The Feminist Companion to the Bible, a collection amounting to 20 volumes. In this lively conversation with Dr. Yeshaya Gruber of the Israel Bible Center, she delves into the complex histories, names, types, status, professions, and relationships of the many fascinating women characters in Biblical literature.
