Melchizedek, the priest of God Most High mentioned in Genesis 14, is a mysterious figure in Jewish lore, across many pages of Second Temple writings, and in the Dead Sea Scrolls. In canonical literature, the Book of Hebrews mentions him most often, yet so little is known about him from the Hebrew Bible. Who was this Melchizedek? What made him so remarkable? Why is he called a priest? In what sort of priesthood did he operate? And perhaps most consequentially, why is Jesus considered to be a priest like him by the New Testament writers?
